Screenshot of the Week! 10/03/19

Almost all of the manga I read is digital, and most of it I read via my phone. Since I have it on my person at all times, it’s too convenient not to. Due to this however, I end up with 10 billion screen shots of manga pages. If something sick happens, if there is amazing art, or if a page just makes me feel any sort of emotion, my reaction is to take a screenshot. It’s so satisfying. In this column, I take one of those many, many screenshots and talk about why I had to immortalize it within my phone’s photo app.

Series: One Piece, by Eiichiro Oda

One of my favorite parts of One Piece is when Oda lets Straw-hat Crew goof around with each other. Another, is when he plays around with the laws of physics of his world (it’s his world he can do what he wants). This particular page combines those two aspects in spectacular fashion.

It was already established that Brook can heal his bones by slamming down a pint of 2%, which sort of makes sense. I mean he’s all bones, and he’s gotta be able to heal himself somehow. Then when Luffy, who’s always been a “Monkey see monkey do” character, applies the same technique it’s totally totally over the top, but theoretically plausible. Pair that with the deadpan delivery that Brook and Luffy give, like it’s the most natural thing in the world, and it makes the scene so hilarious it overshadows any lingering doubts about whether or not it makes any sort of sense.

I’d love to see more of these scenes of the crew interacting with each other. Maybe after One Piece is over Oda can make a slice of life manga with One Piece characters, I would read the shit out of that.
